Bennie Maupin – Ensenada

Sounds like:
Miles Davis, Pantha du Prince, Nicolas Jaar

What’s so good?

Bennie Maupin might be a new name to you, but he’s an artist with decades of history in jazz. Working with legends like Herbie Hancock and Miles Davis, Maupin has been engrained with the jazz movement for his entire career. His 1974 album, The Jewel In The Lotus, opens with “Ensenada” which is an 8-minute journey with flowing percussions, piano, and wind instruments. I love the way it gently floats out of the speakers, feeling more like a moment in time than a song. Its layers are simple yet complex, and something I’m drawn into again and again.Like many others, Bennie Maupin was recently displaced with the LA wildfires. His Go Fund Me is here, for anyone who would like to support this legendary artist on his family’s road to rebuild. In the wake of the devastating wildfires in Los Angeles country, we’re highlighting impacted musicians with ways to directly support their recovery efforts.
