What’s so good?

One of Cape Town’s finest exports has to be Beatenberg, a trio of musicians that includes Matthew Field (vocals and guitar). He’s been dabbling with his solo act for a while now, much of the content full of whimsy and silliness.

His latest single “Sails or Jason” is perhaps t he first ever song I’ve written about that features my own name heavily. Alas, Matthew confirmed this is pure coincidence. And given the lyrics sing about someone who plays clarinet, wears a suit, and has a sparkle in their eyes… he’s probably being honest.

Still, I won’t lie: the namesake caught my attention. And while the song itself – an easy-going chamber pop folk single – isn’t normally my bread and butter, I do find myself enjoying the warm and heartfelt progression.

All that aside, I hope there’s a) more up his sleeves; b) it has a slightly more upbeat approach. Fingers crossed!
