Lo Ghost – The Cut Worm

Sounds like:
LCD Soundsystem, Metric, Interpol

What’s so good?

The Cape Town based twin wraiths Lo-Ghost entice us with crunchy electronica and sermonic catharsis in the flagship track “The Cut Worm” from their latest album So Glad We’re Friends.

From the opening track “Rat King” right through to the intimate “My Love” there’s an inherent conflict of interest, a beautiful conflict of interest. Lo-Ghost has been a staple in Cape Town’s alt rock scene for 10 years now, and their albums (from Cult Pop to Night Speaks) have always had a bite, a reflection of loss, anger, or frustration layered in synthy chords. But with So Glad We’re Friends they’ve finally let all that go. They’ve finally, for the first time in a while, breathed.

“The Cut Worm” hits you at the tail end of the album, and it’s a beautiful amalgamation of all these imploding feelings built over 10 years of tears, human experience, and the intentional finality of the album. They are thanking us, for staying, for crying, for laying our hands on them and growing with them. It’s all come full circle.

The track is crunchy and woozy, with just the right amount of bites and slashes to remind us that Lo-Ghost could go hard at any second. But they’ve chosen not to. They’ve chosen to be intimate, intentionally honest, intentionally human.

“The Cut Worm”, from So Glad We’re Friends, is Lo-Ghost at their most human. No longer the wraiths of the alt rock stage, it’s a beautifully constructed track that not only introduces us to the revived Lo-Ghost, but also reminds us of their bright and deathly synthy past.
