Oxis – Fingerling

Sounds like:
Sam Gellaitry, Sophia Stel, ear

What’s so good?

New genres seem to surface every day, and lately I’ve been swimming in one called “oceanic electronica.” Artist Oxis is the leader, releasing every single track within an aquatic theme. Her name comes from the Latin word “auxis,” also known as tuna – her childhood nickname.

At first, I assumed the fish imagery was just a temporary rebrand for an upcoming release, but the marine life persona has been chalked out since the beginning. This is an artist who knows exactly who she is, how to grab attention and how to drop music at a pace others cannot keep up with.

Oxis always pairs her mixes perfectly with a specific aquatic creature. Take “Piranha:” it gives you the sensation that your ears are being nibbled at by the sharp-toothed fish. Her newest single, “Fingerling,” is a gentler vibe. It is a subtly anxiety-driven siren sound with repetitive lyrics saying, “I can’t disappear”. A fingerling’s small size makes it vulnerable, but not invisible.

I recommend listening to Oxis’s music with headphones, especially for this song. The details are more profound, and the beats bounce from ear to ear. The track glitches at one point, making me believe my speaker was trying to recover after being submerged. I love it when an artist is this intentional and clever with their sound design.

Come 2026, Oxis needs to have a live set in an aquarium. I’m curious what the next album’s fish will be.
